Roundup Linked to Certain Types of Cancer

“Roundup” is the commercial brand name for a chemical “weed killer” containing the herbicide glyphosate. The product was first manufactured in 1974 by Monsanto, which is now owned by Bayer.

In the mid-1990s, Monsanto developed a line of genetically engineered crops that could be sprayed with Roundup directly without killing them. These “Roundup Ready” crops became incredibly widespread by the early 2000s, leading to a spur in the purchase and use of glyphosate products.

A report by the USDA describes glyphosate as “the most successful herbicide in history.” It notes that 90% of genetically modified crops are herbicide-resistant varieties, and the majority of those are glyphosate-resistant.

The popularity of glyphosate products like Roundup and herbicide-resistant GMO crops has led to a situation where 1.4 billion pounds of Roundup are applied every year in over 160 countries across the globe.

Widespread use of Roundup has spurred fears in scientific communities and among concerned citizens. A report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) found glyphosate in 36% of sampled streams in nine midwestern states. Glyphosate was also detected in samples of common consumer food products, including oatmeal, granola, and cereal.

Some individuals exposed heavily to glyphosate herbicides like Roundup later developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Investigating the world’s concerns, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate was “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015.

Millions Awarded to Victims in Roundup Cancer Lawsuit Settlements

The first plaintiff to successfully obtain a Roundup lawsuit payout was Dewayne “Lee” Johnson. He worked as a groundskeeper in Northern California until he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014. Johnson’s heavy exposure to Roundup combined with research indicating it’s cancer-causing risks compelled a jury to award him $289 million.

The Roundup weed killer lawsuit revealed that Monsanto deliberately misled the public by co-sponsoring manipulated studies, and they even considered ghostwriting one of their own. These tactics indicate that Monsanto was not only aware of the risks posed by Roundup but actively fought to keep the public misinformed.

Because of Monsanto’s actions, the jury awarded Dewayne Johnson $250 million in punitive damages alone. Johnson’s award was later reduced to $78 million after a judge ruled that punitive damages cannot exceed the initial damages.

Another Monsanto Roundup lawsuit resulted in a $2 billion verdict for a couple that contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma separately after using Roundup on their lawn for years. The award was later reduced as a result of a decision upon appeal.

A Roundup class action lawsuit is now being developed in response to these outcomes and the fact that many more victims with cancer still have unpaid damages.

Who Has the Highest Risk of Developing Roundup Weed Killer Cancer?

Certain jobs involve mixing and spraying hundreds — sometimes hundreds of thousands — of glyphosate herbicide every year. The jobs with the highest likelihood of being exposed to Roundup and other carcinogenic herbicides include:

  • Farmers
  • Professional gardeners
  • Landscape workers
  • Groundskeepers

Roundup is not the only product containing the cancer-causing chemical glyphosate. Other brand names for products that contain glyphosate include:

  • Enforcer
  • Kleeraway
  • Bonide KleenUp
  • Bayer Advanced DuraZone
  • Spectracide
  • Hi-Yield Killzall
  • Rodeo

Some people who lived near farms or properties with large, manicured lawns could have been exposed to Roundup, as well. When there are winds during the application, pesticide drift can cause exposure, as can runoff or direct contact with the weed killer. Others may have been exposed through consumer use of Roundup on their lawns or home gardens.

How to Know If You Can Obtain a Roundup Lawsuit Settlement

Individuals who have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and who have a history of exposure to Roundup may be eligible to file a Roundup lawsuit to seek compensation for all of their damages. These damages can include:

  • Medical bills — past and future
  • Out of pocket expenses related to treatment
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Punitive damages against Monsanto

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that first forms in lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small organs found throughout the body that aid in fighting off infection and foreign substances. Once cancer forms in the lymph nodes, it can quickly spread throughout the lymphatic system to other organs. Symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma include:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen but painless lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Night sweats
  • Shortness of breath

See a doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms, especially if you have a history of heavy exposure to herbicides like Roundup. You can speak with a lawyer to learn more about your options for filing a Roundup cancer lawsuit.
