What are Invokana® and Invokamet®?
Invokana® (also known as canagliflozin) is a SGLT2 inhibitor that when combined with a diet and exercise is used to treat type II diabetes by improving glycemic control and lowering blood sugar. Invokamet® is also an SGLT2 inhibitor but combines the ingredients of Invokana® (canagliflozin) with metformin into one pill to significantly reduce blood sugar when treatment with one of these drugs alone is insufficient at controlling blood sugar.
F.D.A Warnings on Invokana®
In May of 2015, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning stating that anyone who took type 2 diabetes drugs Invokana, Farxiga and Jardiance may be subject to the risk of ketoacidosis. Per the FDA, the product and potential risk for ketoacidosis is currently under investigation. The FDA also cautioned that anyone taking these drugs should seek immediate medical attention if they experiencing the following symptoms which may be signs of ketoacidosis:
- Difficulty breathing
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain

In September 2015, the FDA further announced that it has strengthened its warning for the type 2 diabetes drug canaglifozin (Invokana®, Invokamet®) related to the increased risk of bone fractures and added new information about decreased bone mineral density which relates to the strength of a person’s bones.
What is Ketoacidosis
Ketoacidosis is a serious medical condition where the acidic waste builds up in the blood and urine. This usually occurs when the body starts breaking down fat cells for fuel because it cannot use sugar in the bloodstream because there is not enough insulin. Although this is a serious condition, it is treatable.
