Three-Car Crash in Lexington, SC, Leaves One Person Dead, Two Injured, and One Charged with DUI

A fatal three-car wreck on I-26 on Saturday, February 20, led to DUI charges for one of the drivers after another driver died and two more people were hurt.

Authorities say the crash happened around 2:00 AM on I-26 westbound near mile marker 91. A 2014 Ford Pickup was moving westbound on I-26 when it slowed for other traffic. A 2019 Dodge Caravan immediately behind the Ford slowed as well. At that point a third vehicle, a Dodge Challenger, crashed into the back of the Caravan, pushing it into the first vehicle.

Sadly the Caravan’s driver, 48-year-old Michael Costner, was pronounced dead at the scene despite wearing a seatbelt. Two passengers in his car were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

SCHP officials report that the driver of the Dodge Challenger, Christian J. Luna, 27, was charged with felony DUI that resulted in death.

Although people often think of head-on crashes when they picture fatal accidents, rear-end accidents can be serious as well. Following too closely is a leading cause of rear-end collisions. It’s recommended that drivers allow at least two or three seconds between vehicles, or more if road conditions are hazardous or visibility is low.
