Hosting an Event
As the host, you are taking on the responsibility of the safety of every person in your home. You may not like it, but that’s the way it is. With that in mind, there are a few things you can do to help ensure that everyone has a good night and ends it without trouble.
Serve plenty of high-protein foods in conjunction with alcohol. These will help slow the absorption of those adult beverages in the system of your guests. If you don’t want to cook for everyone, consider hosting a potluck to make sure there is plenty of food available.
Keep soft drinks and water stocked. Not everyone at your party will want to drink alcohol, and even those that do may want a soft drink “buffer.” Put the alcohol away after the halftime festivities have concluded. Switch to coffee and water. This will help to ensure that the people at your party will have stopped drinking by the time it’s time to drive home.
Take keys at the door. If anyone tries to leave, they will have to come to you to get their keys and you will be able to judge whether or not they are too intoxicated to get behind the wheel. If this is the case, offer to arrange for a sober ride home or toss them a pillow and a blanket and point the way to your couch.
You Are a Guest
If you will be attending a party, the smartest thing you can do is to arrange for a sober ride home before you start drinking. Whether you choose a designated driver to go with you or install the Lyft app on your smartphone, make a plan for getting home safely. Alternatively, you can always ask your host if you can spend the night — just be sure to make arrangements before Sunday night.
Pace yourself while you drink. Drink a glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume, and be sure to eat plenty of food. This will help mitigate the effects the alcohol has on your system. If it comes time to leave and you think you are a bit too intoxicated to drive safely, don’t.
