A motorcycle and truck collision in Columbia, SC left one man dead and a passenger injured after a truck turned in front of the bike on Monday, July 12.
Authorities say the accident happened at the intersection of U.S. 378/Garners Ferry Road and Lower Richland Boulevard around 2:15 p.m. A truck was attempting to turn left onto Lower Richland Boulevard when the driver failed to yield, causing the motorcycle to hit the truck. Sadly, the motorcycle’s driver, 42-year-old Anthony H. Burks of Cayce, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger on the motorcycle was also injured and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Unfortunately, this kind of accident is not uncommon. There can be many factors contributing to collisions, such as tired or distracted driving, speeding, failing to obey traffic signs, or driving under the influence. However, in many accidents where larger vehicles turn in front of motorcycles, the driver reports that they simply didn’t see the bike. This is due to a motorcycle’s relative size, making them easy to miss. For this reason, drivers are advised to “look twice and save a life” before turning, so they have a second chance to see smaller vehicles like motorcycles.
