A community across the state of South Carolina is mourning the loss of Jessica Munyon, an SC Whitmore school teacher, who died in a Spartanburg County crash on Wednesday, February 10.
Authorities say Munyon’s car vehicle was hit by another car fleeing law enforcement officers. Sadly, Munyon was later pronounced dead from severe injuries suffered in the crash.
A news release said a South Carolina Highway Patrol deputy had tried to stop the driver who hit Munyon’s car, but he fled from officers. The deputy then took into consideration “the suspect’s reckless driving and excessive speed, the time of day, the heavy traffic in that area, and the approaching school zone, and terminated his attempted traffic stop in the vicinity of Paradise Lanes.”
Unfortunately, the car continued speeding away and later collided with Munyon’s car on Blackstock Road.
Munyon leaves behind a husband and young daughter and is also mourned by students across the state. Because SC Whitmore is an online school available anywhere in the state, she touched the lives of students in all 46 counties.
“She was a great teacher,” said Abigail Hickman, a senior at SC Whitmore School. “At the drop of a hat, she would be willing to help you in any way she can, no matter what. You don’t have to worry about feeling judged by her or that she would not help you. She would do anything she could to help you.”
The school board said in a statement that they were making plans to honor Munyon’s legacy.
Unfortunately, in many situations, there is little anyone can do if a speeding or reckless driver crosses their path on the road. Authorities say they have arrested a suspect in connection with the crash but have not released a name yet.
